MB: Education Tax Credit - Fixing a Broken Promise

Author: Colin Craig 2011/03/31
  • Tax increase welcomed, but two years overdue
  • Province had fiscal room to keep commitment given declining enrolment

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) gave the NDP government a single clap for finally righting their broken promise on the Education Property Tax Credit. The NDP announced a clear schedule to increase the credit during the 2007 election, but broke it many times once elected.

“Despite the fact it’s two years overdue, we’re pleased they’re finally keeping their election promise to increase the credit to $700,” said CTF Prairie Director Colin Craig. “Taxpayers will hear excuses about the economic downturn preventing the increase in the credit. The reality is the NDP broke their promise well before the downturn in Canada.”

“With far fewer students in the system than a decade ago, education spending should not have skyrocketed.  Under reasonable spending levels the tax credit could have increased sooner.”

Craig reminded the NDP government that they are currently running a $497 million deficit and need to control K-12 spending if they are to get the deficit under control.
